The Nigeria communication commission (NCC) has set up a new
price cap for short message service (SMS) across all
the network in the country and the new price
cap was
#4.00 per SMS for all domestic
off-net SMS with immediate effect from February 5th,2013 as a result of 60% off
the normal SMS price .Having evaluated and analysed the sms traffic information
provided by the operators, the commission noted that there was a general
recognition that the cost of SMS
is too
high especially interconnection rate 0f #1.20 for sms as determine by the
commission in 2009 .
Though telecom operators proposed a price cap ranging from
5-10 per sms for off-net and had urge the commission not to set a price cap for
international sms due to the fact that interconnect rates for international sms
were outside their control as it is terminated through international carrier
service provider in various jurisdictions
As at yesterday, THISDAY confirm that all GSM operator had
complied with the NCC directive.
Thanks to Nigeria NCC for their good work.
